The future of LED lighting

In an era when energy proficiency is the need of the hour lighting is yet another step in this direction and can prove very helpful in a long way for saving energy. The best way to save energy is to control and reduce its consumption and the ultimate method to execute it is by changing old patterns of lighting systems. Energy saving bulbs and lights is the first and very effective approach towards checking the over consumption of energy. Energy saving technology, energy saving solutions, energy saving bulbs and energy saving lamps hold a promise of solving the energy deficiency problem which is gravely threatening the world.

In our ever-growing need for energy efficiency in everything from autos to light bulbs, more and more research is being put into the technology of LEDs. In the past few years, LEDs have gradually replaced incandescent and fluorescent bulbs in many applications, including traffic lights, flashlights and reading lamps. While compact fluorescent bulbs are still the best choice for cost-effective energy efficiency, LEDs are rapidly rising as the newest contender on the market.

The incandescent bulb has changed little since its invention in 1879 by Thomas Edison. A regular 40-watt incandescent bulb burns through a lot more energy than it needs to produce the light you see. It typically converts only about 5% of the expended energy into visible light, while the remaining 90-95% is lost in heat. On the other hand, LED light bulbs generate very little heat, transferring most of their energy directly into light.

Given their proven ability in saving energy cost and their, LED lighting solutions have come a long way from being used only for notebooks (laptops) and flashlights to being used in parking areas, street lights, traffic lights highways, corporate offices, hotels, public buildings, restaurants, gallery, lounge, cars and signboards. The benefits of LEDs are myriad indeed.

The latest technology allows the LED light bulb to produce about the same amount of light as a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). However, LED light is completely directional, unlike incandescent and fluorescent bulbs which splash light in all directions. LEDs focus their light in one direction, so that you have light exactly where you want it, which is great for task lights but is undesirable in ambient or general lighting fixtures. CFL and incandescent bulbs are better choices for general lighting. The way you light up our homes could have negative and positive implications on our environment. No doubt, therefore, by making transition from one lighting system to another, you could help save the otherwise vulnerable environment. As far as home lighting is concerned, new strides are being made not only in energy efficiency, but also the longevity of light sources. Herein lies the strength of LED lighting systems. In fact, by just changing one of your regular incandescent light bulbs to a LED light, you can help to protect the environment and save money. LED or Light Emitting Diodes Light are diodes (electronic components that let electricity pass in only one direction) that emit visible light when electricity is applied, much like a light bulb. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are known to offer latest technology lighting solutions for modern residential lighting.

Because of advancing technology and improvements to the manufacturing processes, LED bulbs will soon become more affordable to the average consumer. The Department of Energy has estimated that LED ligthing could reduce U.S. energy consumption for lighting by 29% by 2025, saving the nation's households about $125 billion in the process.

LED Benefits - At A Glance:
1. Uses only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of incandescent or CFL).
2. Runs cool (warm to the touch) - generates little heat compared to standard bulbs.
3. Saves money on electricity.
4. Light is comparable to the color of daylight.
5. Instant on/off.
6. Long lasting - up to 60,000-hour bulb life.
7. Works with most dimmer switches.
8. Durable bulbs - no fragile filaments to break.
9. Can sustain moderate power surges.
10. Directional lighting generates less wasted light.
11. Works with sensor-activated lights.
12. Works in cold weather.

But this only a part of the story, as new technologies pervade human life and innovations becoming the buzzword in lighting solutions, LED lighting systems would sure become a craze among the environmentally-friendly consumer. So, why wait when you have the choice to save your planet without giving up on your taste for good living.
